Nuremberg merchant J.C. Volkamer (1644-1720) was a devotee of exotic citrus fruit when it was still unknown north of the Alps. His garden contained a wide variety of specimens and he commissioned a team of engravers to create 256 plates of 170 varieties of fruits, published in two volumes. The first, published in 1708, The Nuremberg Hesperides or: A detailed description of the nobel fruits of the citron, lemon and bitter orange; how they may be correctly planted, cared for and propagated in that and neighboring regions” Is a beautiful, detailed series of large-sized copper plates representing citrus fruit floating above landscapes of Northern Italy, his native Nurembuerg, and other areas including Bologna, South Africa, the Genovese sea and the Schönbrunn Palace.
