Greek & Roman Art & Architecture

We began collecting Greek and Roman period engravings in tribute to our heritage during family trips to Greece. Antiquities and mythic figures come to life in these timeless depictions of notable historic venues and objects. From the graceful forms of Greek and Roman sculptures to the intricate detailing of architectural landmarks, each piece is a testament to the artisans’ craftsmanship and artistic prowess.

Piranesi

Giovanni Battista Prianesi (1720-1778) was an Italian archaeologist, architect, and artist known for his engravings of Rome and fictitious “atmospheric prisons.” His son, Francesco Piranesi (1758-1810), was also known for his architecture and engravings, continuing his father’s engraving and publication of Roman Ruins in Paestum, Pompeii, and Ercolano. The younger Piranesi was known for his engravings of antique statuary; Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte regarded him as the finest engraver in Europe and issued an imperial decree granting him 300,000 French francs if he would dedicate himself solely to engraving.
