What is an Antique Print?

A print or engraving is a piece of paper on which a design has been imprinted from a matrix  (sometimes wood or stone, but in our works from the 17th and 18th centuries, the matrices are copper plates). The handmade matrix can be used to make multiple impressions. The engraver/artist incises an image directly into the prepared copperplate using different-sized sharp tools called burins, which remove a metal layer, creating a recessed line. The plate is then inked. Printing occurs by hand pressing paper against the inked plate or by rolling it through a special press. The resulting impression on paper is the reverse image of the original engraved on the plate. The pressure of the press forces the ink onto the paper and also produces an outline of the edge of the metal plate in the paper, known as a platemark. Impressions printed before 1900 are considered antique prints.
