Pompelmus Orientalis

This is an antique botanical print titled “Pompelmus Orientalis,” or Pomelo/Shaddock, from Johann Christoph Volckamer’s comprehensive work on citrus, Nürnbergische Hesperides, published between 1708 and 1714. The print is a hand-colored engraving by Joseph de Montalegre. It depicts a specific variety of citrus floating above an Italian landscape featuring the Palazzo del N. H. Venier at Moncelice. Volckamer was a Nuremberg merchant and botanist who documented the exotic citrus fruits grown in European orangeries during the 18th century.
