Limon racemoso dal Broco

This is a hand-colored engraving titled “Limon racemoso dal Broco” from Johann Christoph Volckamer’s botanical work Nürnbergische Hesperides. The work, published in two volumes in 1708 and 1714, was one of the first illustrated books dedicated solely to citrus fruits. The text on the ribbon identifies the fruit as “Limon racemoso dal Broco”. The text at the bottom identifies the location as the “Palazzo del N. H. Marcello al Botegin” in Venice. Volckamer was a wealthy merchant and botanist who grew exotic citrus fruits in Nuremberg, Germany, and commissioned artists to document them.
