George Washington and

the American Revolution

Over the past 300 years, many celebrated artists have portrayed the founding father of the United States, George Washington, and his home, Mount Vernon, on the Potomac River as part of the patriotic imagery of America. These engravings showed the celebrated statesman and his estate, which became a popular tourist destination. Our 18th and 19th-century imagescapture different stages of his life, and of Washington, DC, often depicted after noted paintings.
