Spada fora con foglia rotonda, Volckamer
Category: volkamer
Description
This image is a hand-colored engraving from Johann Christoph Volckamer’s comprehensive botanical work, Nürnbergische Hesperides. Published between 1708 and 1714, the work is renowned for its detailed illustrations of citrus fruits floating above landscapes and architectural views. The engraving depicts a specific type of lemon above an architectural view of a Venetian palace–specifically, the Palace of the N. H. Grimani at the Golden Tree in Fiesso. The plates were created by a team of engravers based on Volckamer’s work, including Joseph de Montalegre who is credited on this plate. The book was one of the first botanical works to focus almost solely on fruit, combining scientific illustration with aesthetic appeal by including gardens and villas in the backgrounds.
